Dental surgeon and inventor.
Edward Maynard, dental surgeon, was born on 26 Apr. 1813. He married Ellen Sophia Doty in 1839, then Nellie Long in 1869. Maynard died in Washington, D.C., on 4 May 1891.
Maynard began a dental practice in 1836 and continued until the 1890s. He discovered dental febriles and performed the first successful filling of a nerve cavity with gold foil in 1838. From 1857 to 1891, he was professor of the theory and practice of dentistry at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. Among Maynard's patients were American presidents and senators; he was also court dentist to Emperor Nicholas I of Russia.
