Biographical History

Ralph H. Long (1882-1948) served as the NLC's third executive director from 1930 until his death in 1948. an ordained pastor, Long previously served as stewardship secretary for the Evangelical Lutheran Joint Synod of Ohio and Other States (1927-1930). The Lutheran Commission for Prisoners of War was formed in the Fall of 1943 by the NLC and the Emergency Planning Council of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod to identify Lutheran clergymen among the prisoners in U.S. camps, support them in providing a ministry for their men, provide literature such as service books and prayer books, and provide a ministry of Lutheran chaplains or.

Clergymen to prisoners of war camps. Upon completion of its work in 1946, the Commission was terminated.
