Biographical History
Organized in 1844 by University of North Carolina President David L. Swain, the North Carolina Historical Society collected publications and manuscripts related to the history of North Carolina. The Society ceased operation in the early 20th century.
When the Historical Society of North Carolina was formed in 1945, it was said to be a reorganization based on earlier societies. It was, however, different in membership, purpose, and type of activities from any such organization that had existed in the state. For details, see clipping files in the North Carolina Collection and For History's Sake by H. G. Jones.
The Historical Society of North Carolina was founded in 1945.
