Biographical History
The Council of Deans, formerly the Council of Academic Deans, considers matters of mutual interest to all the deans and advises the Vice President as he seeks to determine long-term educational plans and general criteria and standards for the acquisition and deployment of University resources in the academic area. It acts upon academic matters in accordance with administrative policies determined by the President and the Executive Council; assists the President in preparing the budget and formulates policies under which changes of status and salaries of faculty members are recommended to the President; reviews any proposed recommendations of a Dean, a salary, or a change of status which deviates from the accepted policies; and, at appropriate intervals, it reviews the policies governing change of status and salaries of faculty and makes needed revisions. In any matter involving the faculties or interest of two or more major instructional units the Council reviews the circumstances and recommends courses of action.

As defined in the 1954 Faculty Handbook, the Council of Deans is composed of the following: President (ex-officio), Vice-President (ex-officio), Dean of the University, academic Deans, and the Dean of Students. The President (or in his absence, the Vice-President) presides over the meeting of the Council of Deans. The Council meets at regular intervals determined by the Council, upon call of the President or Vice-President, or at the request of any two members of the Council.
