USS General Grant was assigned to patrol the upper Tennessee River, where it helped to clear Confederate troops from the area. In October, 1864, it destroyed 22 boats off Port Deposit and Crow Island, Maryland. On November 25, it took up the pontoon bridges previously constructed by Union troops in Decatur, Alabama.
