Anderson, N. J. (Norman Jacob)

Norman Jacob Anderson was a graduate of UCLA in 1934, and began his military career as an Aviation Cadet in the Marine Corps Reserves. As a Marine Corps pilot and Commanding Officer, Marine Bombing Squadron 423, Anderson flew more than one hundred bombing missions in the Bismarck Archipelago and Philippine campaigns. For heroism and distinguished service during this period (1944 and 1945), he was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and seven Air Medals. He earned additional awards, including the Silver Star Medal, while serving as a pilot during the Korean hostilities. In 1967, Anderson assumed duty as Deputy Commander for Air, I11 MAF and CG, 1st MAW, in the Republic of Vietnam and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. His last tour of duty was as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Atlantic Command, retiring from active duty June 30, 1972.
