Paul Hamilton (1762-1816) was born in St. Paul's Parish, South Carolina on October 16, 1762. He fought in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. Hw was the tax collector of St. Paul's Parish from 1785 until 1786, and also served as Justice of the Peace in 1786. Hamilton was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 1787-1789 and was a member of the South Carolina Convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1789. He was elected governor of South Carolina for one term, serving from 1804-1806. After his term in office, Hamilton served as Secretary of the Navy under President James Madison from 1809 until 1812. He died June 30, 1816.
