Biographical History

Virginia Clay McClure graduated from the University of Kentucky with an A.B. from the College of Arts and Sciences, 1912. She was vice-president of her senior undergraduate class, a member of Y.W.C.A. and President from 1911-1912, a reporter for the Idea, editorial staff for the Kentuckian, and a student assistant in German. McClure received her M.A. degree from UK in 1928, and later returned to UK to earn her Ph. D., making her the first woman to earn a Ph.D. at UK in 1934. She was a teacher for over 25 years at schools in Middlesboro, Paducah, Cynthiana, and Henry Clay high schools, and retired from teaching in 1959. She died in 1980 at the age of 91.
