Biography

Jose Maceda was a specialist in both Indonesian and Filipino music and has conducted fieldwork research in both Indonesia and the Philippines. Born in Manila, he studied piano in Paris, France, and San Francisco, musicology at Columbia University, anthropology at Northwestern University, and ethnomusicology at UCLA. Maceda completed his doctoral degree in ethnomusicology at UCLA (1963). His dissertation is entitled "Music of the Maginadanao in the Philippines." His published works include "Philippine Music and Contemporary Aesthetics" (1956), "Music of Southeast Asia: A Report of a Brief Field Trip" (1956), A Manual of a Music Field Research with Special Reference to Southeast Asia (1981), and "Hanuoo Music from the Philippines" (1955). Maceda was Professor Emeritus at the University of the Philippines until his death on May 5, 2004. He received the National Artist Award for Music in 1997.
