Biographical History
Scots anatomist.
Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the University of Edinburgh, serving at first jointly with his father, Alexander Monro (1697-1767), beginning in 1755. Shortly later he went to London to further his studies. In 1757 he returned to Edinburgh to assist with lectures during an illness of his father, and then again went abroad, studying in Berlin, and then in Leiden. He returned to Edinburgh in January 1758, when his father again became ill. When the elder Monro withdrew from teaching later that year, the son succeeded him, and in May 1759 was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Monro continued to teach until 1808. Beginning in 1798 he held the appointment jointly with his son, Alexander Monro (1773-1859), who succeeded him in 1808.
Alexander Monro (1733-1817) was a physician from Scotland.
