Biographical History

The McLeod family arrived in Texas in 1897, emigrating from North Carolina. McLeods have been active in the Presbyterian ministry, law and public affairs in Texas. They married into the Vinson family, also prominent in those fields.

William Angus (Will) McLeod (1876-1947) moved with his father, John D. McLeod, from North Carolina to Texas. In 1905 Will McLeod graduated from the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and married Martha (Mattie) Vinson. He pastored in Nacogdoches, Ennis, and Austin, and taught at the Austin Seminary. From 1918 to 1919 he ministered in Europe for the Army YMCA. From 1919 until his death, McLeod was pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Cuero. He had a lifelong interest in genealogy and family history. William A. (Angus) McLeod, Jr. (1912-1961) graduated from Texas A & M College and the University of Texas School of Law. He practiced in McAllen, where he served on the City Commission and as mayor. In 1939 he wed Helen Manning (1916-1995), and they raised seven children. After Angus McLeod's death, Helen McLeod taught high school and owned a bookstore. She also researched genealogy.
