Nowland, James, 1809-1886.

James Nowland of Liverpool, England, moved the United States in 1847 and settled down in Houlton, Aroostook Co., Maine. In 1854, he sold his farm, and in 1856 worked as a clerk in the shipping office of a timber firm in St. John, New Brunswick. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Nowland left Canada to join the 15th Regiment of Maine Volunteer Infantry, obtaining a commission of the regimental adjutant. Until March of 1862, the regiment was attached to Butler's New Orleans Expeditionary Corps, and then to the Dept. of the Gulf. In 1852-1864, the regiment fought in Mississippi, Florida, and Louisiana. On June 28, 1862, Nowland submitted his resignation and left the regiment in October of 1863. He then returned to farming and died in Ashland, Me., in 1886.
