Caffey, Helen, 1906-1992.

Helen Pauline Caffey was born December 4, 1906 to Helen Winn Mead of Decatur, Georgia and Lochlin W. Caffey of Lowndes County, Alabama at Camp Keithley, Mindanao, Philippines where her father was serving in the U.S. Army. Caffey received two Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Colorado in 1928, and in 1930 she earned a degree in Bachelor of Arts degree in Library Science from Emory University in Atlanta. She then worked as an assistant librarian at Carnegie Library in Atlanta where she helped research for Margaret Mitchell in her writing of Gone With The Wind. Caffey then became head librarian at the Inman Park branch library at Little Five Points, until 1947, when she received a librarian position in Ventura, California. In 1950, Caffey became the head librarian at Thomas Branigan Library in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and she established a collection of Southwestern literature and maps. Caffey retired from there in 1971. Caffey died on August 15, 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
