Biographical History

In 1816, Baton Rouge was selected for an ordnance depot to supply troops in New Orleans and posts up the Mississippi and Red Rivers. The arsenal was constructed ca. 1818-1819. In 1861 Confederate troops occupied the arsenal until the United States Army re-occupied it in 1862. In 1869 the buildings were transferred from the Ordnance Dept. to the Quartermaster's Dept. The discontinuance of the post was directed in May 1879. In 1886 the buildings were transferred to Louisiana State University.
