Russell V. Lucas, Jr. was born in Des Moines, Iowa in 1928 and later moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned his B.A. from Macalester College in 1950 and his M.D. from Washington University in 1954. Lucas came to the University of Minnesota in 1954 to complete a rotating internship and a residency in the Department of Pediatrics. The residency was interrupted by his service in the U.S. Army and then completed in 1959. After a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship in pediatric cardiology at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Lucas took an appointment as assistant then associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at West Virginia University. In 1966 Dr. Lucas returned to the University of Minnesota and in 1968 he was appointed the first Paul F. and Faith S. Dwan Professor of Pediatric Cardiology while also serving as the director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Lucas retired in 1998 and died on December 12, 2001.
