Biographical History

In 1972 North Carolina's university system, which had been established in 1931 by the Act of Consolidation, was expanded to include sixteen campuses. At that time the Board of Trustees of the Consolidated University was replaced by the Board of Governors, and separate Boards of Trustees were re-established for the constituent institutions. These Boards of Trustees consist of thirteen members each, eight of whom are elected by the Board of Governors and four of whom are appointed by the Governor, with the student body president serving as an ex-officio member. They serve either two-year or four-year terms. The Boards are advisory both to the Board of Governors and to the Chancellors of their respective institutions. As prescribed by state law (G.S. 116-33), the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill serves as advisor to the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System on matters pertaining to the Chapel Hill campus. It also advises the Chancellor on the management and development of the university at Chapel Hill. Other powers and duties, not inconsistent with the law, are defined and delegated to the Board of Trustees by the Board of Governors.
