Biographical History

Bishop John Henry Hobart (1775-1830) founded the Protestant Episcopal Theological Society in New York City in 1806 to promote theological knowledge among its members, many of whom were theological students. Hobart and other area ministers presided over meetings, and members included Benjamin Tredwell Onderdonk (1791-1861), a future bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. The group served as the inspiration for the General Theological Seminary, founded in 1817 by Hobart and others.
