Biographical History

Eleazer Bromberg, applied mathematician and NYU administrator, began his career at NYU in 1953 at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Studies. He started as the Administrative Director of the Atomic Energy Commission's Computing Center. In 1957 he became the Administrative Manager of Courant and in 1959 the Assistant Director. He also served as Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Mechanics from 1953 to 1957 and became a full Professor of Applied Mathematics in 1957. In 1970 Bromberg joined the central administration as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In this capacity he assisted in planning and administering the University's instructional, research, and public service programs. He succeeded Dr. David Z. Robinson. In 1972 Bromberg was named Deputy Chancellor of the University. Bromberg was born October 7, 1913 in Toronto, Canada. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the City College of New York in 1933, a Master of Arts in Physics from Columbia University in 1935, and his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from NYU in 1950. In 1948 he married Edith Weiss, with whom he had three sons.
