Bishop Joseph L. Bernardin (1928-1996) was appointed auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 1966. In 1968, Bernardin assumed the duties of General Secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Cardinal of Catholic Church, Chicago Diocese; native of Columbia, S.C.; ordained to the priesthood on 26 Apr. 1952 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (Columbia, S.C.); died 1996.
