Biographical History
Bernard Brussel-Smith was born in New York City in 1914. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1931 to 1936. In 1941, he studied wood engraving with Fritz Eichenberg at the New School for Social Research in New York. After working as an art director for a medical advertising agency he became a freelance wood engraver for advertising in 1946. In addition, he created illustrations for books and magazines including Holiday, Life, Saturday Evening Post, and Reader's Digest. He was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1952, and was the recipient of numerous awards. His work is included in the permanent collections of many museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum. He died in 1989.
