Biographical History
Painter; Santa Barbara, Calif.
Artist.
Painter, landscape painter, etcher; Santa Barbara, Calif.
Painted large majestic landscapes of the Far West and the Grand Canyon.
Artist.
Thomas Moran was an eastern artist who enjoyed going on geological expeditions even though he was not a rugged type. He joined an expedition to the remote headwaters of the Yellowstone River in Wyoming and two years later he went to the Grand Canyon which he sketched several times from an overlook called Powell's Plateau. When he returned to his studio he combined his small sketches to produce enormous paintings.
His watercolors were instrumental in encouraging Congress to establish Yellowstone as the nation's first national park. In 1877 he took a trip to the Saint Johns River where he extensively sketched Fort George Island and produced several works on this subject and the Florida/Georgia Everglades.
