Biographical History
Pioneer cattleman; arrived in Tucson in 1856, and raised the first American flag over Tucson when the Mexican soldiers left following the Gadsden Purchase. He worked in ranching, farming, mining, and the lumber business as well as serving as Justice of the Peace in several communities. Thomas Steele married Elizabeth Kirkland, William's daughter, and they ranched near Willcox, Tempe, and Ajo, Ariz. In 1907, Thomas worked in Cananea, Mexico putting timber in the copper mines.
