Haynes, Winthrop P., 1887-1979.

Winthrop Perrin Haynes was born in 1887 in Massachusetts. He was educated at Harvard University and was a member of the 1908 Shaler Memorial Expedition to South America. He also went on the Great American Geographical Society Transcontinental Excursion of 1912.

Haynes was an assistant geologist at Harvard from 1908 to 1916, and also taught at Radcliffe and Wellesley Colleges. From 1916 to 1918 he was an assistant professor at Kansas University. During the first World War, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and was commanding officer of the Second Army's Thirteenth Photographic Section stationed in Toul, France. In 1919 he returned to Kansas University as an associate professor.

In 1920, Haynes joined Standard Oil Co. of New Jersy as a geologist. He then transferred to Europe, traveling around Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa inspecting existing oil fields and prospecting for new sources. He returned to the U.S. in 1936. In 1948, Haynes went back to Harvard University as a visiting lecturer until his retirement in 1955. Dr. Haynes died in June 1979.

Winthrop Perrin Haynes, petroleum geologist, professor of geology, author of many publications on stratigraphic and structural geology and paleontology, and World War I aerial photographer, was born 6 September, 1887, in Hyde Park, Massachusetts, to Frederic M. and Annie (Rogerson) Haynes. Educated at Harvard University, he earned his A.B. in 1910, A.M. in 1912, and Ph.D. in 1914. While at Harvard, Haynes went on the Shaler Memorial Expedition to South America (Brazil) in 1908. He also went on the great American Geographical Society Transcontinental Excursion of 1912. He was the instructor in charge for Harvard Summer School’s geological expeditions to Montana; New Brunswick and Quebec, Canada; and Colorado in the years 1913 to 1916.

Haynes was an assistant geologist at Harvard, 1908-1916, instructor at Radcliffe College, 1911-1914, and instructor at Wellesley College, 1914-1916. From 1916 to 1918 he was an assistant professor at Kansas University. His time at Kansas was interrupted by the First World War when he was commissioned in August, 1918, as a 2nd Lieutenant and made commanding officer of the Second Army’s Thirteenth Photographic Section stationed in Toul, France. After being honorably discharged in August, 1919, he returned to Kansas University as an associate professor until 1920.

In 1920, Haynes joined Standard Oil Company of New Jersey (SONJ) as geologist and chief of party for an expedition to Mexico’s west coast. He then transferred to Europe as chief geologist, traveling all around Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa inspecting existing oil fields and prospecting for new sources from 1922 to 1936. He returned to the U.S. in 1936 as geologist for Standard Oil’s Producing Department in New York City. In 1948, Haynes went back to Harvard University as a visiting lecturer until his retirement in 1955. He served on the Board of Overseers of Harvard during the years 1960-1962. Dr. Winthrop P. Haynes died in June, 1979.
