Biographical History
Epithet: collector of hearthmoney, Ireland
Jonathan Carver heir and claimant, along with relatives and others, to a huge tract of land in Wisconsin and Minnesota supposed to have been granted to Carver by the Naudowessie or Western Sioux at the great cave of the upper Mississppi, May 1, 1767.
The original grant has never been located, although a 1775 copy in Carver's hand is extant, and was not made public until a year after his death, when it was mentioned in John Coakley Lettsom's introduction to the 1781 edition of the Travels. Extensive efforts by agents of the Carver heirs and speculators to legitimize and profit from the grant came to naught when the U.S. Congress denied its validity in 1825.
