Biographical History
Sir Theodore Janssen was a financier politician. Born in Holland, he became a naturalized English citizen in 1685, and was a founder of the Bank of England and director of the South Sea Company. He was made baronet at the request of the Prince of Wales, and became a member of Parliament in 1717. A successful and wealthy businessman, he was arrested amid scandal after the collapse of the South Sea Company, and much of his fortune confiscated to help pay off the Company's debts.
