Biographical History

Scientist and educator (Iowa State University, B.S., 1955; M.I.T., Ph.D., 1959), Johnson was appointed Assistant Professor of biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in 1967. When denied tenure in 1973, she sued the university on the grounds of sex discrimination, retaining Sylvia Roberts as her attorney; the National Organization for Women Legal Defense and Education Fund supported Johnson. The university was cleared of sex discrimination charges in 1977.
