Biographical History
William Force Stead was born in Washington D.C. and attended the University of Virginia from 1904 to 1908. In 1908 he was appointed American Vice-Consul to Nottingham, and in 1913 became Vice-Consul to Liverpool. In 1915 he spent two terms at Ripon Clergy College, and was curate at Rose, Herefordshire, in 1916-17. He received his B.A. at Oxford in 1922, and then took the position of Assistant Chaplain at St. Mark's, Florence, where he remained until 1925. Returning to Oxford, he took an M.A., and successively became Chaplain and Fellow of Worcester College. His writings include Wayfaring Songs & Elegies (1924) and Festival in Tuscany (1927).
