Biographical History
W. H. Flachmeier emigrated from Wiemelshausen, Westphalia, to the U. S. in 1893 where he attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, as did his sons after him. He married Emilie Pautz of Witten on the Ruhr, and they settled in Texas where he held pastorates in Pflugerville, Rosebud, and Gillespie County. His oldest son William August was Lutheran pastor in Columbus, Texas, from 1923 until 1941 when he entered the army as a chaplain in the Asiatic Theater during World War II. From 1948 to 1961 he was Director of Parish Education of the Texas District of the American Lutheran Church and later director of the Lutheran Audio-visual Library.
