Bill Putnam, the son of Springfield Mayor Roger Putnam, was born and grew up in Springfield. After serving in the mountain troops in Italy during World War II, he studied geology at Harvard. Putnam then served for a brief period as an instructor at Newton College of the Sacred Heart before accepting a position with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. In 1952, with the financial backing of his father, he founded Springfield Television Broadcasting Corporation. In addition to his management of the television station, Putnam delivered the on-the-air editorials from 1959 to 1984.
