Biographical History

Eduard Julius Hans Mueller was born in Augsburg, Germany, on October 20, 1875. He received preparatory education at the Royal Leitpoldgymnasium, Munich, Germany. He enrolled at the Philadelphia Seminary and graduated in 1896. In addition, he received from the University of Chicago a bachelor of divinity degree in 1902 and a doctorate of divinity in 1920. He received a call to serve as a missionary for the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America (GC) prior to finishing his seminary training. His ordination took place at St. John's Lutheran Church, Allentown, Pennsylvania, upon his graduation, and he was commissioned as a GC missionary on June 3, 1896, at St. Michael's Church, Allentown, Pennsylvania. He married Johanna Emilie M. Huhn on September 12, 1896.

The Rev. and Mrs. Mueller arrived in Rajahmundry, India, on October 18, 1896. After successfully passing his final language exam, Pastor Mueller assumed administrative responsibility for the Tadepalligudem mission district. He remained there until his resignation from mission service in 1899. His resignation occurred in response to an incident involving the India Mission Council and the GC Board of Foreign Missions, regarding the question of ordination of a local pastor.

Pastor Mueller returned to service shortly thereafter and was given responsibility for the Narasaravupet-Cumbum area, encompassing 5,000 square miles and 236 villages. He worked in this area until 1910 when the field was divided, and he and Mrs. Mueller went to work at a newly created mission station located at the Taralupad railway station.

In 1914 Pastor and Mrs. Mueller left on a furlough, but by the time they were to return to work, World War I had started, and as a result, they were not able to return to India. In 1920, Pastor Mueller accepted a call from the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) to work at its mission station in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He and Mrs. Mueller worked there from 1920-1923. Pastor Mueller died November 22, 1923, while on active service. He is buried in Buenos Aires.
