U. S. Frigate Raritan was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and launched 13 June 1843. The Raritan, commanded by Capt. Francis H. Gregory, served the flagship of Commodore Daniel Turner, then the commander of Brazil Squadron, until its return to the United States in November 1845. During the war with Mexico, the Raritan was based at Pensacola and operated with the Home Squadron as it blockaded the east coast of Mexico and supported Army forces. In May 1846, as Commodore David Connor's flagship, the Raritan joined the Potomac in landing 500 men at Point Isabel to reinforce that military depot. During 1847, the Raritan participated in the landings at Vera Cruz in March; at Tuxpan in April; and at Tabasco in June. The Raritan then served as flagship of the West Indies Squadron as the flagship for the Home Squadron, and in 1850 was transferred to the Pacific to cruise between Panama and Cape Horn. The Raritan was destroyed in April 1861, by Union forces as they evacuated the Navy Yard.
