Biographical History
Robert H. Coombs, sea captain, of Belfast, Me., married Harriet Pendleton in 1850. Their son Charles R. Coombs, an amateur photographer, began making 4" x 5" glass plate negatives in 1892; around 1895 he began using a 5" x 7" format camera; also took photographs in smaller formats with celluloid and paper negatives. He worked in the undertaking business purchased by his father when the captain retired and took over the business when his father died. Horace M. Coombs, local historian, and son of Charles R. Coombs, worked with his father and became director of the Coombs Funeral Home in Belfast.
