U.S. Senator from Oregon and Chairman of the Citizens' Advisory Council on the Status of Women, 1966-1968.
Born in Cloverdale, Oregon, in 1907, Maurine Brown Neuberger was educated at the University of Oregon. She taught English and physical education in Portland, Oregon schools. She married Richard L. Neuberger in 1945. From 1950 to 1955 she served in the Oregon Legislature as a Democrat from Multnomah County. She was elected U.S. Senator from Oregon in 1960, and served to 1967.
Richard Lewis Neuberger (1912-1960) and Maurine Brown Neuberger (1907-2000) were the first couple to serve together in the Oregon Legislature, Maurine in the House of Representatives and Richard in the House and Senate.

Richard was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1954 and died shortly before completing his term. After Richard's death, Maurine was elected the first woman U.S. Senator from Oregon, becoming the third woman ever to serve in the Senate.
