Biographical History
Born in Duluth, Minnesota on October 16. Attended Superior Teacher's College, Superior, Wisconsin. Began military career as an enlisted man, and served on the Mexican border in 1916. Attended officer's training in 1917 and received his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 37th Infantry. Resigned his commission in 1919 to work as a journalist. Reappointed 1st Lieutenant in 1921. During World War II, served in the Pacific from 1941- 1943. Contracted malaria and returned to the United States where he took command of the 86th Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division. Following the war, served at the Nuremburg war crimes trials. Following his retirement, went back to school to obtain a Master of Arts degree at age 58.
