The Plains Museum Society was created in 1929 to establish a museum in the South Plains of Texas. The society changed its name to West Texas Museum Association in 1935. Responsible for building the Texas Tech Museum in 1970 and the Ranching Heritage Center in 1976 in Lubbock, Texas.
