Biographical History
Attorney, politician, and governor of Louisiana (1936-1939).
Richard W. Leche graduated from Loyola University Law School in New Orleans, La., in 1923. He managed Louisiana Governor Huey Pierce Long's campaign for the United States Senate in 1930, was secretary to Long's successor as governor, Oscar K. Allen, and was elected governor in his own right as the Longite candidate in 1936. Leche's administration was marked by scandal and corruption, forcing his resignation in 1939. He was convicted of using the mails to defraud and was imprisoned between 1940 and 1945.
