Biographical History

Gilber Adrian, widley known also as Adrian, (born Adrian Adolph Greenburg, March 3, 1903, Naugatuck, Connecticut – died September 13, 1959, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California), American costume designer whose most famous costumes were for The Wizard of Oz, including the iconic ruby slippers, and hundreds of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer films between 1928 and 1941. He was usually credited onscreen with the phrase "Gowns by Adrian". Early in his career he chose the professional name Gilbert Adrian, a combination of his father's forename and his own. His designs for Broadway include George White's Scandals and Nifties of 1923 but much of his career was spent in Hollywood, designing for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer from 1925 to 1939. He retired in 1952 but returned to Hollywood in 1958 to design Camelot, for which he posthumously received a Tony Award.
