Biographical History
John Amos Chaffee and Jason P. Chamberlain were partners in the Gold Rush-era camp of Second Garrote, near present-day Groveland, in Tuolumne County, Calif. The two gained renown in the story Tennessee's Partner, by Brett Harte, who based the fictional story on the miners' celebrated friendship.
