Sir Edmund John Monson was a 1st Baronet and British ambassador in Paris from 1896 to 1904. His political career began in July 1856 when he was appointed attache in Paris. Throughout the course of his life, Monson served as private secretary to Lord Lyons, a member of Parliament, consul in the Azores, consul-general at Budapest, second secretary to the embassy at Vienna, and arbitrator between the United States and Denmark and between France and Great Britain. He received honorary degrees for his outstanding political service from Oxford University and Cambridge. He was granted an honorary position as one of the British commissioners for the Paris exhibition in 1900, was made GCVO in 1903, and was created baronet upon his retirement on February 23, 1905. The French bestowed upon him the honor of bearing the grant cross of the Legion of Honor.
