S.L.A. Marshall was a United States (U.S.) Army colonel, brigadier-general (BG), and noted historian.

Brigadier General Samuel Lyman Atwood Marshall; was a native of Catskill, N.Y. and a veteran of both World Wars and the Korean war. He is considered the outstanding military critic, being assigned by the Army as chief combat historian in the European theater, World War II; and again in Korea. In addition to his military metals and decorations he has been given high honors by the governments of France and of Italy. Between wars, he is chief editorial writer for the Detroit News and author of a dozen books on military matters, some of which have been made into movies. General Marshall and his wife visited St. Bonaventure for the first time when he was the speaker at the Centennial observance of Armed forces Day in May, 1958. The couple returned to St. Bonaventure when General Marshall was awarded an honorary degree at the Commencement exercises, in 1959.

S.L.A. Marshall served as an enlisted man and United States (U.S.) Army officer who was promoted to brigadier general in 1951. In World War II he served as Chief Combat Historian of the Central Pacific Area in 1943 and various historian positions in the European Theater of Operations to include Chief Historian of Theater and of the Armies of the Occupation from 1944 to 1946. During 1950-1951, he was assigned to Korea as Infantry-Artillery Operations Analyst. Marshall began his career as a war correspondent in 1953 when he returned to Korea. As a war correspondent he later covered actions in Sinai, Lebanon, and the Congo. He had tours of active duty analyzing combat operations in South Vietnam. Marshall is the author of 39 books.

Born in 1900, Samuel Lyman Atwood Marshall moved to El Paso, Texas, in 1915. In 1917, his military career began, spanning WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, until he retired at the rank of brigadier general in 1960. His journalistic career, which began in 1922, ran parallel to and was an integral part of his life both in and out of active military service. He wrote more than 30 books, dozens of journal articles, and countless newspaper, radio and television pieces before his death in 1977.
