Army officer.
Brigadier General in Continental Army during American Revolution; born, ca. 1730, in Scotland; married Elizabeth Tyler; joined S.C. Militia 1760; served in "Snow Campaign," 1775; led 2nd Cherokee expedition, 1776, ambused at Esseneca; signed treaty acquiring large land cession from Indians, 1777.
Commanded S.C. Militia in Robert Howe's Florida expedition of 1778, and shared blame for its failure; sent troops home in 1779 as British troops attempted to capture Charleston, S.C.; accused of treason but not proved; died 1786 near Summerville, S.C.
