Austrian actor, manager, and director, Ernest Julian Reinhardt (1876-1954) was a creative innovator in scenery and staging. He produced plays and spectacles in Germany, Austria, England and the United States and founded the Salzburg Festival in 1920.
Reinhardt was acquainted with Franz Werfel since at least 1920 and staged a number of Werfel's plays, including Juarez und Maximilian and In einer Nacht at the Theater in der Josefstadt, Vienna, in 1925 and 1937, as well as The Eternal Road on Broadway, New York City, in 1937.
Austrian actor, manager, and director, Reinhardt was a creative innovator in scenery and staging. He produced plays and spectacles in Germany, Austria, England and the U.S. and founded the Salzburg Festival in 1920.
Reinhardt was born on Sept. 9, 1873 in Baden bei Wien, Austria; studied for the stage with Emil Buerde, making his debut in Salzburg in 1893; acted in, and later produced plays at the Deutsche Theater du Berlin, 1895-1932, of which he was the owner from 1905; founded the Kammerspiele and Grosse Schauspielhaus theatres in Berlin; produced German classic plays and the entire works of Shakespeare; was first to produce the early works of Richard Strauss; left Germany for Czechoslovakia in 1933, and later came to the US; toured the US 5 times with American actors, producing The miracle and A midsummer night's dream; founded the Salzburg Festival; he died on Oct. 31, 1943.
