Biographical History

Grand Forks School Board, organized in 1881.

The first public school in Grand Forks was organized in 1873 by teacher Miss Hattie Richmond, attended by eight students in a one room school house obtained through public subscription. A rapidly expanding population resulted in the organizaton of Grand Forks County in 1874 and the call for a new school facility. The Grand Forks County Commissioners provided for two county school districts in 1874. The city's population grew from a few hundred people in 1875 to 1,706 people, including 500 school age children, according to the 1880-81 census. The city school district was organized in 1881. Under the provision of an act of the Territorial Council, the Grand Forks School Board held its first meeting on March 17, 1881.
