Biographical History
Abiel Chandler was born in Concord, New Hampshire, and educated at Fryeburg Academy, Phillips Academy, and Harvard College. After a decade of teaching, he became a commission merchant in Boston as a partner in the firm of Chandler, Howard & Company. He retired to Walpole, New Hampshire, in 1845 and died in 1851. By bequest, he founded the Chandler Scientific Department at Dartmouth College and provided a substantial endowment to the New Hampshire Asylum for the Insane. He also provided for his niece Orilla Flanders West.
