Biographical History
Elihu Stout (1786-1860) was a printer and publisher in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana. He published Indiana's first newspaper, the "Indiana Gazette" from 1894 to 1806, and the "Western Sun" from 1807 to 1845. John Francis Bayard (1786-1853) was an officer in the French army under Napoleon, and a Vincennes businessman. Henry S. Cauthorn (Stout's grandson and Bayard's son-in-law) studied at Indiana Asbury University. He practiced law at Vincennes from 1851-1905 and sat as a Democrat in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1871-1881. He also held numerous city and county offices.
