Biographical History
Bob Martinez, the fortieth Governor of Florida, served from 1987 to 1991. Martinez was elected as nonpartisan Mayor of Tampa in 1979, without a runoff; he was reelected in 1983. He served as President of the Florida League of Cities and was a member of the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities. After being defeated by Lawton Chiles in the 1991 gubernatorial race, Martinez was appointed United States Drug Czar by President George Bush.
Mary Jane Martinez worked as a media specialist and later head librarian at Tampa's King High School for 20 years. During that time, she saw firsthand many of the problems that young people are facing. As First Lady, she was deeply concerned about children and worked to strengthen families and help troubled teenagers. She served as the chairman of the board of trustees for the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services, a network of 17 runaway shelter facilities throughout the state, and honorary chairman of Florida Informed Parents, an organization of parent groups united to fight drug and alcohol abuse among children.
She regularly visited runaway shelters and children's drug programs throughout the state and established boards of trustees for both organizations to help raise private money to provide services and professional counseling for children and families, improve existing runaway shelters, and fight drug abuse. In addition, she was actively involved in developing libraries to their fullest potential. She regularly visited libraries and media centers throughout Florida. In 1988 she was appointed by President Reagan to serve on the Advisory Committee of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services.
