Biographical History
Samuel Simpson Marquis was born in Sharon, Ohio in 1866. He served as an Episcopalian minister in Massachusetts before transferring to Detroit, Michigan in 1901 as rector of St. Joseph's church. In 1906, he became dean of St. Pauls Cathedral in Detroit where he later met Henry Ford. He joined the Sociological Department in 1915 and went with Henry Ford on his peace ship expedition. Marquis later became head of the department, but Ford's support of sociological activities waned through the years which led to Marquis's resignation on January 21, 1921. Subsequently, Marquis wrote a scathing book on Henry Ford's character entitled Henry Ford: An Interpretation, published in 1923.
