Biographical History

Wallace Garfield Hayner was born on March 5, 1900 at Curry, near Chapmanville, Logan County, West Virginia, the son of John and Ann Lilly Hayner. He was educated at local schools, received a degree in engineering from Carnegie Institute of Technology by Correspondence, and graduated from Marshall College in 1924. He taught school at the age of eighteen, worked as a division engineer for the Seaboard Airline Railroad from 1923 until 1927, worked briefly in a coal mine, and in August, 1927, he joined the Prudential Life Insurance Company, remaining with this firm until his retirement as manager in 1965. He married the former Violet Etta Nottingham, a native of Pocahontas County, on July 3, 1926. They were the parents of four daughters. Mr. Hayner was active in many civic affairs in Huntington, including raising support for county high schools and a technical-vocational high school, and serving as chairman of the Cabell County Republican Finance Committee. Mr. Hayner was also the subject of an interview conducted for the Marshall University Oral History of Appalachia project. The tape and transcript, open to the public, are located in the Special Collections Department of the James E. Morrow Library. Mr. Hayner died in Charleston, W. Va.on April 21, 1988.
