Biographical History

Douglas Clinton Polhamus (b. 1915, Berryville, Va.-d. Dec. 4, 1998), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1938 and received his pilot wings the following year. Prior to overseas duty, he served as a flight instructor, squadron commander, and director of training with the Air Training Command. In 1945 he was group commander, 330th Bomb Group, flying B-29s for more than 200 combat hours in the air offensive against Japan from Guam. Following an assignment in the Air Force Atomic Energy office at Air Force HQ, he served at Supreme HQ of the Allied Powers of Europe. He later was deputy assistant for atomic energy, Air Force HQ, then deputy chief, Defense Atomic Support Agency. In 1963 he was assigned to the 5th Air Force in Japan as chief of staff. After serving as commander, 6100th Support Wing in Japan, his final assignment was as commander, 1001st Air Base Wing, HQ Command, Andrews Air Force Base, until his retirement in 1968.
