Biographical History

The Griggs family settled in Sutton, Massachusetts, where Thomas Griggs, a blacksmith, purchased land in 1775. Thomas's son, John Griggs, d. 1850, had eleven children, including Lewis, b. 1813, who worked in Boston and in Cincinnati as a merchant; Joseph Franklin, 1822-1897, founder of Western University of Pennsylvania; and George 1826-1891, who went to California in 1849 with the Boston and California Mining and Trading Joint-Stock Company.
